Yes, Machu Picchu is one of the coolest places I’ve ever been in all the world. No, I didn’t hike the Inca trail. In days gone by, you could rock up in Cuzco, any day of the year, put down $65 US and set off on the 4 day Inca trail trek as you like. These days you must make a reservation 6 weeks in advance and pay around $270 dollars. I couldn’t be bothered to make a reservation and didn’t want to pay a tour company heaps of dough when they pay there own employees shit so I decided make it simple and take the bus. From Ollantaytambo I took the train to Agua Calientes and from there an early morning bus to Machu Picchu. It is as grand and mysterious as they say. A must see. Don’t forget to make the hike up to the mountain. The steps are a wee bit slippery but the views are well worth it – a great place to go in the late morning when the day trippers arrive and Machu Picchu becomes a bit crowded.
